On April 28, 1847, Bishop Whelan purchased the present church lot on Market Street from Beverly and Catherine Smith for $306.00 to be paid over a three year term.
The cornerstone for the first catholic church in Parkersburg was laid in April 1850. The small brick mission church measured 30 feet by 60 feet, and built at a cost of $1600.
In 1858 additional lots adjoining the church are porchased for the erection of a school and Rectory which were built in the early 1860's.
On October 2, 1870, the completed church is dedicated, and the final cost of its construction is $59,930.05.
