Earned The Medal of Honor During Civil War for heroism at Aiken, S.C., 11 February 1865.
On February 11, 1865 Sergeant Toban was with Company C, 9th Michigan Cavalry, at Aiken, SC. During the battle Sergeant Toban voluntarily and at great personal risk returned, in the face of the advance of the enemy, and rescued from impending death or capture, Maj. William C. Stevens, 9th Michigan Cavalry, who had been thrown from his horse.
Died: November 1, 1903 in Lansing, MI. at age 57.
