In the early 1980s, a community economic revitilization project was undertaken to jazz up the Elmwood Strip section of Buffalo. The Strip was, and still is, home to several unique shops, nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. In 1982, the neon tango dancers were put up at the south end of the Elmwood Strip, welcoming those to the area. It was designed by Laura Rankin along with Dan Sack and Andy Ferullo, and contains a couple dancing the tango, with the neon depicting them in three different positions.

Unfortunately over the years, the tango dancers and it's companion neon moonrise, fell into disrepair and was neglected. For years it was never lit until the Buffalo Argentine Tango Society, along with a Buffalo councilman, raised some funds to get the neon lit up again. It doesn't quite function as it used to, but the fact that it's working again is a promising sign. The first pose is only half lit, and is on all the time. The other two poses seem to work pretty well for the most part. Hopefully some more money can be found to make it 100% again.
