Naglee was a civil engineer, banker, vintner and Union general during the Civil War, he purchased land in downtown San Jose in 1858 and built an estate and vineyards, growing Riesling and Charbonneau grapes and distilling his own brandy. He was later in the headlines for two scandals involving women who felt jilted, one of whom took him to court claiming she was seduced. His estate was turned into the residential Naglee Park neighborhood shortly after the turn of the century by his two daughters.
