"The idea of a Mississippi Vietnam Veterans Memorial was originally presented to the staff of the Biloxi Vet Center in August of 1985 by a group of Vietnamese Americans who wanted to find an appropriate way to show their appreciation to Mississippians who served in that noble struggle to keep Vietnam a free country."

What came from the idea are two facing walls displaying photos of Mississippians who are labeled, "gentle heroes".
