Salem was a small residential community until an oil boom developed the area in 1900, and it became a small industrial center.
On December 14, 1901, a major fire burned the entire Main Street business district and surrounding area. The downtown area was rebuilt with rows of red brick buildings.
There are 41 buildings within the Salem Historic District. The district is commercial with the exception of a few residences.
