Raeford was established in 1901.
It got its name from two business owners who operated the local turpentine distillery and general store. To help the residence in the area, they decided to have a post office located in their adjoining stores. They needed a name for the post office, so the men combined portions their names to form the name Raeford. Their names were John McRae and A.A. Williford.
