Nicholas "Bigbee" Perkins (1779-1848) gained national fame when he helped capture Aaron Burr in the Mississippi Territory in 1807. Perkins, who was a lawyer and territiorial Register of Lands, also was in charge of a small party who took Burr from Ft. Stoddard to Richmond, Virginia where Burr was tried and acquitted of treason. After returning to Tennessee, Perkins acquired about 12,000 acres in the area and in 1821-22, built Montpier, where he lived until 1838 when he and his wife Mary moved to Meeting of the Waters approximately one mile to the southeast.
