Brown Mt. shelter is just off of (300 feet) the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). From late November or early December, until late May or mid June, the only way in to this shelter is my snowshoe, sky, or other similar mode of trekking. The rest of the year it is open trail.
There is usually some freebee item left by other users. The basic rule is, if you take something, then leave something of equal or grater value.
As for the firewood, if you use up what has been split up, then split up some more for the next user. Do not take the axe from the area, and put it bake in the shelter (away from the doorway) when you are done using it (this is to protect it from the weather).
There is a wood burning stove inside the shelter, and there is a wood shelf/deck about four feet high on two side (inside) for cooking/sleeping on.
An iron-maiden (yes I know, this good o'boy [who grow up in the Gifford Pinchot N.F. in SW Washington State] dated himself with that term) about fifty feet away from the cabin. For all of you that do not know the term, an iron-maiden is a hand powered water pump. And yes the water is drinkable! Note: The pump is disabled during winter months.
Last note: even though the cabin is enclosed, there is no door on the doorway.
