St Paul's Church was built between 1892 and 1897 by the architect Louis Muller (1842 - 1898), to be used as the protestant garrison church for the German army, after the annexation of Alsace to the German Empire in 1871.

It has now been added to the list of Historical monuments by the French government. The church was built in a neo-gothic style, reminiscent of St Elizabeth's in Marburg (Hessen 13th century). Its two spires are 76 meters (250 feet) high, towering above the fork between the Ill and Aar rivers. The location was chosen as the centre of the new part of the city that was to develop in the early XXth century.
In 1919, the edifice was abandoned by the garrison and ceded to the Reformed Church which established its second Strasbourg parish there.
In 1944, an American bombardment destroyed a chapel annex and a major portion of the original stained glass windows.
Inside, the striking feature is the clearcut harmony of the sandstone gallery running all round. Starting along the tribune of the main organ, it skirts the side tribunes, the "Emperor's lodge" (where the choir organis now to be found), the "Commanding Officer's lodge" opposite and all the pillars decorating the far end of the apse.
The only remaining original windows are the eastern and southern rose windows, and the windows along the nave. Just above the tribunes, there used to be a series of 29 colourful heraldic bearings, only seven of which remain : the Empire, Prussia, Bavaria, Baden, Mecklenburg and Alsace are to be found under the eastern transept rose-window.
