This bell was saved from being melted down to make arms. In 1861 all bells in the south were being melted down to make rifles and cannons for the Confederate Army. This Fire bell was moved to the highest tower in the area, St James church. It was then used to warn of attacks of Union troops. After the war it went back to the MFD. It now sits on display at the MFD Fire Museum.
