Many men dreamed for years that Niagara Falls' tremendous power could be used to make life easier. As early as 1757, Joncaire had a crude sawmill on the river. Following the United States control of the area, men built grinding mills, sawmills, paper mills - mills that used a portion of the power available. In 1879, the first electricity was produced by the water turning a small generator - and thousands came to see a light bulb glow at Prospect Point. This action fired imaginations and, in the 1880's more water power was used than ever before. By 1895, the first hydro-electric plant was built on the river; this made cheap power available to industry. The chemical and abrasive industries flourished as a result. By the turn into the 20th century, Niagara Falls was the power city of the world.
