During the industrial revolution of the early 1800s, factories began to sprout up along the shores of the Niagara River near Niagara Falls. By the late 1860s, a group of people concerned with preserving the beauty of the Falls campaigned to restore the area back to its natural state for all people to enjoy.

After more than 15 years of pressure on the state, the Free Niagara crusaders won their battle. In 1885 the Niagara Appropriations Bill was signed creating Niagara Reservation State Park. Today the park is known as Niagara Falls State Park.
