Upon hearing the news that Chief Blackhawk and his Sauk and Fox troops were trying to reclaim their lands, the new settlers to the Apple River region banded together to build their own fort just in case Blackhawk came their way. Sure enough, Blackhawk's men and the settlers fought on June 24, 1832.
To find out how each side turned out after the fighting concluded, you must visit this site yourself.
Guests are invited to park at the Interpretive Center and walk approximately a half mile to the fort site. Disabled guests may drive to the fort site, but that is the exception, not the rule. Parking is found at N42d 19.086' W090d 13.221.
At the fort, hosts in period costume provide a living history example of how life was for the settlers of the Apple Valley and the fear they had for Chief Blackhawk and his men.
Yes, a lot of the information about the site focuses on the settlers point of view, but mostly because that is where most of the accounts and archeological evidence can be found.
The site does try very hard to provide a point of view from the Sauk and Fox, as well.
