The mansion was constructed in 1836 by John Seymour, but failing to pay back taxes resulted in the purchase of the mansion by Sylvester Willart in 1843. Willard's familly, wife Jane and daughters Georgiana and Carolina and in-laws Erastus and Mary Case moved to Auburn from Bristol, CT. Georgiana died in 1901, Carolina in 1916, leaving the mansion and 1.5 million dollar estate to their cousin Willard E. Case. Willard's son Theodore lived in the mansion and built Case Research Lab there. The Lab invented the first commerically successful method of recording sound film, which was purchased by Fox films in 1926. Theodore and his wife Gertrude built a mansion for themselves and the old Willard mansion became a private school, Logan School and was still the offices for Case Research Lab. In 1936, Theodore and Gertrude donated the mansion for use as a museum. Today you will find the Cayuga Museum of Art and History and Case Research Lab at the mansion. See museum website for hours of operation.
