The Spirit of the American Doughboy is a pressed copper sculpture by Ernest Moore Viquesney, designed to honor the veterans and casualties of World War I. The statue depicts a doughboy walking through shattered tree stumps strung with barbed wire, his rifle in his left hand and his right hand held high above his head, clutching a hand grenade.
The inscription on the base reads:
In memory of the comrades who gave their lives in the service of our country during the World War.
Presented to The American Legion Post No. 1 by the Greek-American Citizens, Birmingham, Alabama, Armistice Day, 1923.
