Here is a story that sounds eerily familiar.....American heros, fighting an unusual war with no battlefields, die in a plane crash in Somerset county, Pennsylvania. But the date is not Sept. 11, 2001, but Jan 13, 1964!!
Buzz One Four, a B-52D bomber carrying two thermonuclear warheads, came apart in a terrific snowstorm that day over the Maryland-Pennsylvania state line. The plane and other crewmembers fell into Maryland (atomic bombs have safety devices that keep them from detonating). One crewmember, TSGT Wooten, fell into the Salisbury, Pennsylvania area. Injured in the ejection, he tried to crawl toward the lights of the town, but was blocked by a river. Sadly, he perished before he could be located.
The town erected a small memorial to the airman and the ill-fated bomber. Time and changing economies have resulted in the location of the memorial being rather far away from the main part of town. Local folk do care for the memorial....it is in a mowed clearing and is decorated for holidays. Consider a visit to this memorial, and a visit to the website that tells the story, so that the sacrifice of these cold warriors will not be forgotten.
From rt. 219 in Salisbury, take rt. 669 south across the river. Turn right, and look for Depot road. There is no depot and no railroad anymore. Just past depot road is the trace of the former railroad. Follow this to the right (northbound) for about a quarter mile to the waypoint coordinates. You can find if without a GPS if you are patient and look off to the right of the rail trace.
