The twin towers of Marina City (also known as the corn cobs) were built in 1964 by Bertrand Goldberg. The development was planned to be a "city within a city" and along with 896 apartment units featured businesses like grocers, cafes, a cleaners, fitness center, and more.
Later the apartments were sold as condominiums. The separate commercial section of the development was sold in 1994 and has been redeveloped. The House of Blues opened in the former theater building in 1996. In 1998, AMF Bowling, Smith and Wollensky, House of Blues Hotel, and Bin 36 all opened.
