Luis Jimenez was born in 1940 in El Paso, Texas, into a family with a tradition in craftsmanship. From his father, a sign painter and neon maker, Jimenez learned commercial techniques and received first-hand experience working with the special vocabulary of popular imagery. Known primarily as a sculptor, Jimenez first studied architecture before turning to drawing and sculpture. After moving to New York where he had his first solo exhibition in 1969, Jimenez worked with Latino youth, and produced figurative fiberglass sculptures that reflect his influences from social realism, Pop Art and New Figuration. One author comments that Jiminez "conceives of his work as pedagogical, community-oriented, and involved; it challenges set perceptions of history regarding the making of America."
