This mosaic pavement was in an excellent state of conservation at the time of its discovery, in 1973. It was uncovered along the line of the Holland/Italy International gas pipeline on the southern edge of the motorway. Due to the fact that only a narrow strip was able to be excavated on that occasion, one knows very little about the building in which this mosaic was laid. The vestiges of the neighboring walls, already explored in 1962 - 68 at the time the motorway was constructed, indicated that the majestic route of the west gate was flanked on both sides by vast complexes of living quarters and private businesses.
The mosaic is composed of three elements: two squares decorated with triangles inside and a rectangle of crossing horizontal and vertical lines which is a unique combination. It's however not the case for the elements of decoration taken individually, like the border around the two squares or the triangle decoration. One finds these elements often, laid out differently, in mosaics of Gaul.
