Before the Civil War Grant lived in Galena in a small rented house and worked for his father in town. After returning from the war as a hero the town had this home built for him as a thank you gift.

The state of Illinois manages the Grant Home as a State Historic Site. In 1955 the home underwent an extensive restoration, returning it to its 1868 appearance. It is still operated as a museum. Summer hours: Wednesday through Sunday 9am - 5pm April through October Winter hours: Wednesday through Sunday 9am - 4pm November through March Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Suggested donation of $3 for adults and $1 for children.
