Long Description:
P.C. Potter donated an office building in the village of Marquette for use as a courthouse as long as he could be assured that the county seat would remain in the village.
Nine years later, in 1859, the county seat was moved to Montello and the first courthouse was built in 1863. The courthouse was built of stone and brick and featured a second-floor courtroom. The building was replaced in 1918 with the current courthouse on a hill overlooking Lake Montello. The structure is a simple Beaux Arts design but the building is an imposing visual landmark with a strong cornice, projecting pavilion and portico and exterior of locally quarried stone. The courthouse is open Monday-Friday, 8AM-4:30PM.
The Sheriff's Office and Jail currently houses the Marquette County Food Bank, an office for Buildings and Grounds, an office for Hope House, and storage areas.
