The BARTON HOUSE, 118 Summit Ave., in the rear of the Martin House, is also by [Frank Lloyd] Wright. Forming an interesting contrast to its more opulent neighbor, this small house exhibits the same motif and manner of composition.
Darwin Martin desired to have his family close to him, so he had this house built for his sister and brother-in-law, Delta and George Barton. The floor plan is based on the Walser House Wright designed in Chicago in 1902. The Barton house was the first building built as part of the Martin House complex. It provided Wright and Martin an opportunity to see if they could find an amiable partnership as architect and client.
For several years the house was used as a gift shop while restoration work was underway at the Martin House. Since the restoration work has been completed, the Barton House has been closed and will now be restored.
