Constructed in 1968, the Helium Monument, also known as the Helium Time Columns are a memorial to the centennial of the discovery of helium in the spectrum of light from the Sun. The monument is here in Amarillo because Jack Kelley got the first government contract to ship and supply helium. A large quantity of the helium found on earth is located within 250 miles of Amarillo. The monument incorporates four time capsules and weighs 8.5 tons. It was relocated to this spot in 1983.
