Long Description:

History

The first Canyon Country Library opened on September 20, 1971 at 18536 Soledad Canyon Road and was the second permanent library facility operated by the County Public Library in the Santa Clarita Valley. At that time, Canyon Country Library replaced the Saugus Mobilibrary. The Mobilibrary was a cooperative venture between the Saugus Union Elementary District and the County Public Library. The 5,050 square-foot building was originally leased from Pierpont Warehouses Corporation, and in 1985, was purchased by the County Library. On November 17, 2001 the library was renamed the Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library moving to a brand new 17,000 square foot facility (utilizing 12,864 square feet) at 18601 Soledad Canyon Road.

Collection

The original collection of 20,000 volumes has now expanded to 101,439 items, including 87,706 adult and children's books; 102 newspaper and magazine subscriptions, and audiovisual collection with 7,273 audio recordings including books-on-tape, and 6,358 video recordings including DVDs. The library also has telephone books from most geographic areas in California; pamphlets; and a local history collection.

Preschool Storytime

Preschool Storytime is held on Wednesday mornings at 11:15 a.m. and is for 3-5 year olds. The goal of the Storytime program is to provide children with an enjoyable library experience based on books and language. The program has been designed to include a variety of stories, songs, finger plays and crafts appropriate for preschool age children.

Homework Center

The Homework Center is specifically designed to satisfy homework assignments from the local schools. The Homework Center has been upgraded with a $21,500.00 grant from Pacific Bell and received a donation of four CD-ROM/Internet Workstations from the Friends of the Libraries of the Santa Clarita Valley.
