The Point Pinos lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on
the West coast of the United States. Since 1855, the lighthouse has been a
navigational aid to passing ships. It's first lightkeeper was Charles
Layton who was killed in 1856 helping a posse pursue the notorious bandit,
Anastacio Garcia.
Although not advertised at the lighthouse, it is thought that Charles ghost
still wanders about the lighthouse performing his duties as diligently as
ever. There are the unexplained phenomenom: missing or misplaced items;
doors that open and close on their own. Who knows?
The lighthouse has a wonderful museum on the three floors of the
lighthouse. The tower is off limits, but you are free to roam the rest of
the building and the surrounding grounds the four days that the lighthouse is
open to the public.
The rest of the time, you may see Charles wandering the lighthouse, trimming
the wick on the whale oil lamp, or polishing the windows of the copula.
