Shippensburg University began in 1871 as the Cumberland Valley State Normal School. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania purchased the school in 1917. In 1927, the school became the State Teachers College at Shippensburg. The college was renamed Shippensburg State College in 1960, and in 1983, it became Shippensburg Universiy of Pennsylvania.
Approximately 6,600 undergraduates and 1,000 graduate students attend the university.
Shippensburg University also has it's own student-run radio & television station, and a university-run child care center care for children of students and staff.
