The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is named for Dr. James Naismith, who created the game of basketball for YMCA in Springfield, Massachussets. Dr. Naismith had been ordered to create a game that would create an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class of boys through the winter. Naismith created a game he called basket ball (original name) and boys, girls, men and women have been distracted by it ever since.
The Hall of Fame's full mission, as listed on their Website is: "To honor and celebrate basketball's greatest moments and people via:
The integrity of the HOF election process
Educational and outreach initiatives
The world's finest sports museum
Traveling exhibits that enrich and educate
Worldwide events actively involving all fans"
The interesting basketball shaped building that holds the HOF was built in the late 1990's and houses a museum that both honors enshrinee's of the HOF, and provides a high-tech interactive experience to teach visitors about the game.
