Horace H. Rackham served as the first president of the Detroit Zoological Society. Rackham died at age 75 in 1933. The Rackham Memorial fountain, dedicated on May 27, 1939, was designed by Frederick Schnaple and sculpted by Corrado Parducci. The fountain consists of two ten-foot tall bears holding a water basin in the center of a large reflecting pool.
