The Katharinenkirche is the town's landmark of Oppenheim. Started building probably at 1225. In 1258 the first romanesque phase of construction was finished. The construction of the east-tower started 1262, the work on the nave 1317. Several additions were made in the following 100 years and in 1469 it was completly finished.
The Katharinenkirche was lutheranic since 1556 and since 1565 protestantic parish church of Oppenheim. After the Peace of Westphalia 1648 it was finally handed over to the Reformed Church.
1689 it was destroyed by the french. The roofs and almost every window were destroyed. In the following years all the vaults collapsed.
The citizens tried to rebuilt the church, but all the attempts were in vain. In 1873 a notary took the initiative, founded a building assosiation and in 1889 the reconstruction was finished.
In 1937 and 1959 it was renovated extensively.
