The circular monument stands on the shore of the Merrimack River on the University of Massachusetts Lowell campus. The UMass Lowell community lost at least seven members that fateful day, among them Douglas A. Gowell, class of 1971; Robert J. Hayes, '86; Brian K. Kinney, '95; John A. Ogonowski, '72; Patrick J. Quigley IV; Jessica Leigh Sachs, whose parents are alumni; and Christopher Zarba, who studied at UMass Lowell in the 1970s (from the cited site).
The names of those remembered are etched on the outside of the monument, and in the center stands a tree, growing skyward.
