G. W. Haltom bought a Howard clock to sit outside his jewelry store on 6th and Main. After World War II, the original, manually wound clock mechanism was replaced with an electric clockworks. Later, in 1988, when Haltom's was looking for a new location, they only agreed to the current one on 3rd and Main, in Sundance Square, if the City of Fort Worth granted them a dispensation to put the clock out front. The dispensation was granted. The clock was refurbished in 2006 and now is an "atomic clock", using radio waves to verify the time.
The clock is 18 feet high and the center of the dials are fifteen feet above the pavement. Each of the four dials is three feet in diameter and the clock weighs 4,000 pounds. It was manufactured by E. Howard Clock Company of Boston, Mass.
