Alton Stewart died in a plane crash on Christmas Day, 1929. However, the Town of Coats still honors this local man who introduced many to the thrill of flying.
To reach the marker from the intersection of NC-55 and NC-27 on the north side of Coats, proceed south along NC-55 for 0.49 mile, to the marker on your right.
The tombstone has a photo of Mr. Stewart, as well as a reproduction of his flying license (which was signed by Orville Wright). To reach the grave from this marker, go 0.2 mile west along W. Hammer Street and turn right onto South Patterson. The cemetery will be on your left.
The grave is on the north side of the cemetery, halfway between the entrance and a flag pole. It is surrounded by a low metal fence, painted white.
