The two flatbed cars of a CP Rail train that derailed on Wednesday evening January 14th 2004 as it crossed the four-lane Garden Street overpass, killed 2 women when it jumped the tracks and plunged down the embankment.
14 containers on the derailed cars fell from the train, about half of them tumbling down the embankment onto the road.
One of the containers – some of which are 12-metres long – fell onto the passing van, killing the two people inside. The victims were a 36-year-old woman from Whitby and her 19-year-old niece, a Keswick resident.
Garden Street, which leads to the busy 401 highway, runs through a residential area. People living in the area said the derailment shook the neighbourhood like an earthquake.
Some of the containers burst open as they fell, spilling their contents, mostly paper and boxed goods. The contents did not pose an environmental threat.
The derailment was caused by a broken wheel that tore up the track as it went, according to a report by the Transportation Safety Board.
