The park is a memorial to Thomas Jefferson’s role in opening the West, to the pioneers who helped shape its history, and to Dred Scott who sued for his freedom (and lost) in the Old Courthouse. It includes the Gateway Arch, the Old Courthouse, and the Museum of Westward Expansion.

The Dred Scott decision widened the political and social gap between North and South and took the nation closer to the brink of Civil War by declaring that no slave or descendant of a slave could be a U.S. citizen and that they had no rights. 2007 marks the 150th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court Decision in the Dred Scott Case. Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will commemorate the Dred Scott Decision with a yearlong series of activities including: a scholarly symposium, an essay contest, an exhibit, trial reenactments and other programs.
