Located on a outside wall of "The Resource Center of the Americas," a nonprofit organization dedicated to human rights, economic justice, democracy and cross-cultural understanding.

This cross-border collaboration between artists in Minnesota and Mexico was lead by a pair of veteran muralists based in Morelia, Michoacán. This mural was produced in eleven weeks during the summer of 2001 by four artists from Mexico, three artists from the United States and 200 community volunteers. More than 20,000 tiles were cut and mounted onto 130 sections before being applied to the wall. The mosaic was a labor of love.

This beautiful mural contains images representing the struggles of the peoples of the Americas, across time and space.

At the upper left, monarch butterflies move freely across borders, symbolizing the continual migration of peoples throughout history. According to Nahua legend, monarchs also carry the souls of the dead and return each spring to celebrate new beginnings.

At upper right, a man releases the dove of peace and democracy, next to fingers representing our collective aspiration for human liberation and equality.

This mural was a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The site of the mural use to contain a questionable "sauna" business. How good it is too see an art like this turn what was once the ugliests part of the neighborhood into one of the most beautiful.
