The
following is an excerpt from Missouri: A Guide to the 'Show Me' State,
1941 in the Tour 13 section:
On the northern side of Graniteville, reached by a short foot path, are
the Elephant Rocks, great masses of stone that have been carved by the erosive
forces of wind and water into gigantic pieces of crude statuary.
The Elephant Rocks are now in Elephant Rocks State Park. The road in this
area has been moved to the west of the Elephant Rocks (at the time of the Guide,
highway 21 was east of the Elephant Rocks). The park is a day use park with a
large picnic area, parking lot and a Braille interpretive trail through the
boulders. The park also includes a former quarry which has flooded forming a
beautiful lake. The coordinates listed above are on the top of the rock
outcropping near the largest of the "Elephants" named Dumbo weighing in at over
680 tons. The park entry is at N37° 39.059' W90° 41.402'.
