The Fort Worth firm of Saguinet, Staats, Hedrick & Gottlieb designed this 1924, 10-story hotel with Beaux-Arts elements. It was never one of Houston’s finest hotels, nor its most elegant, but it seems to be the oldest continuously-operated.

If you can make out the ‘ghost sign’ on the side of the building, from 1927, you’ll see it advertising “Conditioned Air. Room Rates $2.00 to $2.50.” Restored as the Alden Hotel, the room rates are a bit higher now, but it’s nice to know that the rooms still sport ‘conditioned air.’
