Ubiquitous local architect Joseph Finger designed this building for the Byrd’s Department Store. The same company that erected the building in 1935, Fretz Construction Company, was responsible for its renovation into lofts in 2005.

Unlike some of Finger’s other creations, this boxy building is almost completely devoid of ornamentation, relying almost exclusively on large plate-glass windows set in horizontal channels for decorative effect. You have to look very, very close to see the vertical detailing, only emphasized by the accumulation of soot.
