Long Description:This building constructed between 1838 and 1842 served as the
Johnson County Courthouse from 1842 to 1878. The building is was
constructed of red brick in a Federal design and was stuccoed in
1870. The courthouse was the setting for the Old Drum trial in 1870
(see
Old Drum waymark). This building remained the courthouse until
the city shifted its center of activity to be closer to the
railroad and a new small courthouse was built in 1867 and the last
court was held in this building in 1878. This building is the
oldest existing building in the county and currently is part of the
Johnson County Historical Society Museum complex.
