The statue of General George Sears Greene (May 6, 1801 - January 28, 1899) honors a man who was the oldest field commander in the Army of the Potomac.
At the age of sixty-two, Greene led his brigade of thirteen hundred fifty New Yorkers into battle at Gettysburg on July 2nd.
Throughout that long night his regiment helt the Summit of Culp's Hill against a force of the enemy that outnumbered his three to one.
Following the war, Greene resumed his profession as a Civil Engineer. General Greene died in 1899.
