Long Description:
General Alexander Hays (July 8, 1819-May 5, 1864) was a Union army general in the American Civil War, killed in the Battle of the Wilderness.

Hays was born in the town of Franklin, Pennsylvania, studied at Allegheny College and then transferred to the U.S. Military Academy in his senior year, graduating in 1844.
