Another important tunnel on the Allegheny Bike Trail! Kennerdell Tunnel is in better shape than Rockland, with only a few fallen bricks and very little springwater leakage.

Most likely built in 1915 when the nearby Rockland Tunnel was completed for the Conrail line. Like the Rockland Tunnel, this one has a dogleg at one end which makes it impossible to see the other end when entering. This lends to a spookier effect when entering. Also like Rockland, this passage has the full complement of graffiti left by ne'er do wells who visit to drink and party. But not a soul was around in the daytime when we came by. And speaking of "we", it's always a great idea when visiting a spot like this to travel in pairs or groups to avoid the rare danger of an "ambush" or trouble from others. On the lighter side, when you reach the approximate middle of the tunnel, try stopping and listening to the silence. It is so quiet you can hear eachother's heartbeat!
