This unique Civil War memorial began in 1896 when ladies of the G.A.R. of California and Nevada started to collect saplings from 40 different Civil War battlefields. The saplings were planted just east of the State Capitol Building in Sacramento and became the first monument in Capitol Park. The grove was dedicated on May 1,1897 and is intended to honor all those who fought in the war.

Much of the grove remains today although in 1914 some trees were replanted to other parts of the park. At the entrance to walkway that circles through it a dedication plaque is mounted on a large boulder. The two tallest original trees remaining are an American Elm and a Tulip Tree. Eleven new trees were planted in 1996 and 1997 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the grove.
