L'aqueduc et les moulins de Barbegal ont été construits pour alimenter la ville d'Arles en eau potable à partir de la chaine des Alpilles.
A environ dix kilomètres de la ville, à proximité du lieu-dit Barbegal, l'aqueduc arrivait en haut d'une colline et actionnait une série de roues à aubes parallèles disposées en cascade qui fournissaient l'énergie à des moulins à farine. Cette meunerie comprenait huit roues à aubes disposées le long de deux conduits parallèles.
Elle a été construite au début du IIe siècle et a fonctionné au moins jusqu'à la fin du IIIe siècle. Elle pouvait produire 4,5 tonnes de farine par jour, de quoi alimenter les 12.500 habitants de la ville d'Arles de cette époque.
Aujourd'hui, des vestiges de ce complexe sont encore visibles.

The aqueduct and the mills of Barbegal were built to feed the town of drinking water Arles starting from the chains of Alpilles.
To approximately ten kilometers of the city, near the Barbegal locality, the aqueduct arrived in top of a hill and actuated a series of parallel paddle wheels laid out in cascade which provided energy to mills with flour. This flour-milling included eight paddle wheels laid out along two parallel conduits.
It was built at the beginning of IIe century and functioned at least until the end of IIIe century. It could produce 4,5 tons of flour per day, what to feed the 12.500 inhabitants of the town of Arles of this time.
Today, vestiges of this complex are still visible.
