Nathaniel Ames was 16 when he joined the Eighth Connecticut Militia. He served one month as a private at Fort Griswold in 1777. In 1779 he served one month in an unspecified Connecticut regiment, and in June 0f 1779, he served six months in Colonel Sherman's Regiment. He served again in December of 1779 for four months in Colonol Walbridge's Regiment. Nathaniel Ames was mustered out with a rank of Quartermaster on Jan. 15, 1783. He also served three years in the Navy. Records say that he was captured by the British.
After the war, he was a farmer and then became a preacher for 45 years. He and his wife, Sarah raised 10 children. In 1836 he moved to Wisconsin where he farmed. The day after he turned 100 years old he moved into town. Two years later he died.
