On July 3rd, 1863, at 5:00 PM the fighting in the Battle of Gettysburg was essentially over, but one small attack remained to be made.
General Elon J. Farnsworth, accompanied by four companies of the 1st Vermont Cavalry under the command of Major William Wells, charged five Confederate regiments of Law's Alabama brigade. Although General Farnsworth and seventy-five soldiers were lost, Major Wells was among the survivors.
The William Wells Portrait Statue was erected by the State of Vermont to honor General Wells and the soldiers under his command.
