The First National Bank and Trust Company always has been associated with the automobile industry in Flint. For example, Arthur G. Bishop was president of First National when it opened its new headquarters in 1924. In addition to being president of the bank, however, Bishop served as vice-president and director of General Motors Corporation. On his Board of Directors, Bishop surrounded himself with such auto industry personalities as Billy Durant and William S. Ballenger. The seven story, classically-inspired building with its terra cotta facings and detailing on the exterior and its coffered ceilings and wood panelling on the banking floor interior reflects the economic supremacy of the auto industry in Flint during the 1920s. While the building has been altered at street level and lost its corniceline, it remains a dominant feature of Flint's downtown streetscape and a financial monument in this auto-oriented community.
