In 1915, inspired by both a lifelong interest in Japanese Culture, San Franciscans Oliver and Isabel Stine purchased 18 acres in Saratoga to build a summer retreat for family and friends. Stimulated by displays at the 1915 Pan-Pacific Exhibition, Isabel traveled to Japan to gather ideas. She named her garden after one of her favorite places in Japan, Fuji-Hakone National Park.
At Hakone Gardens, there is a waterfall, bridge, as well as upper and lower tea houses.
