"The Aud", as it is commonly known by locals, was built between 1939-1940. It was home to the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL for 26 years, the Buffalo Braves of the NBA for 8 years, the Stallions and Blizzard indoor soccer teams, the Bandits indoor lacrosse team, the Stampede and Wings roller hockey teams, and many concerts and events.
The arena was built at a cost of $2.7 million by the Works Progress Administration. Initially, the seating capacity was 12,280 for hockey games, but in about 1969, the roof was raised in order to add another 4,000 seats.
The Sabres, Bandits, and Blizzard moved into their new arena after the 1995-96 seasons. After the move, the building has remained vacant and began to fall into disrepair. In recent years, there have been discussions to have Bass Pro Shops move into a portion of the building. Plans changed several times and it was decided to raze The Aud to allow for a new build Bass Pro. Demolition was completed in August of 2009.
